A Glimmer of Hope A Novella Prequel to Isle of Hope Edgy Inspirational edition by Julie Lessman Religion Spirituality eBooks
When I acquired this prequel novella I wasn't familiar with the term and didn't know what I'd be getting. What I got was 93 pages that introduced the hero and heroine and their respective families. Jack's is the happy, All-American, two-parent family whose dad is a well-respected minister. Lacey is the only child of a highly-acclaimed surgeon and his wife. She has never been accepted by her father and has lived through a lifetime of verbal rejection of the cruelest variety.Jack and Lacey are deeply in love but Lacey's low self-esteem keeps her wanting to connect with Jack in ways that Jack, a seminary student, believes should wait until after marriage. After a compelling scene where Jack tries to comfort Lacey after she's had her worst fight ever with her father yet is hard-pressed not to cross the line he's set for their relationship....the prequel novella ends. Clearly, I'm supposed to buy the full length book. I'm sure it will be a compelling, well-written book and sometime in the future I may read it. but it won't be soon as I'm just too irritated by the author's tactic!

A Glimmer of Hope A Novella Prequel to Isle of Hope Edgy Inspirational edition by Julie Lessman Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I read A Glimmer of Hope after reading Isle of Hope Unfailing Love, which resulted in me muttering things under my breath at the characters, like "That's what you say now." But, I dare you to read A Glimmer of Hope first and then not Isle of Hope Unfailing Love. Impossible! Despite Jack's convictions, A Glimmer of Hope concludes with such a "will they or won't they" ending, you'll want to read more about Jack and Lacey, pronto!
This short story included so many challenges and typical objections to Jack's intentions to remain chaste that I almost wished it were longer, so the reader could see the consequences and resolutions. Of course, that's what you'll get in Unfailing Love - from much farther in the future.
Too often, I think Christian fiction glosses over the struggle many well-intentioned individuals and couples have in maintaining premarital chastity. I love that Julie Lessman treats physical temptation and in this case, seduction, as the real challenges they are.
All in all, it's a great peek at Jack and Lacey's backstories, who they were and how they loved before sins and disillusionment tore apart their lives and rent their hearts.
In this prequel to Isle of Hope we get to know the young Lacey Carmichael and Jack O'Bryen. We see how Lacey's home life shaped who she was. Not receiving any love from her father Lacey is constantly testing Jack's resolve to lead a pure life. Lacey desires physical love from Jack to prove to her that he loves her. Jack is heading to seminary and has every desire to keep their relationship above reproach, but Lacey's brokenness drives him to constantly prove to her his love.
As always Julie Lessman writes a passionate story. Her characters are always driven by fierce emotions. Frankly in Glimmer of Hope Lacey is not a very likable person, she's needy, she's broken, and she's headed for destruction. I found myself wanting to grab her and shake her and then grab her and hug her! Her father is an awful man which we learn more about in Isle of Hope, and Lacey is constantly belittled by him and fighting with him. It is no wonder that she seeks to fulfill her need for love in a physical way because she has no example of love from her father. I found it interesting to read the dynamics of the adults in the story as well. Tess and Adam and Ben and his wife Karen were all best friends in Glimmer of Hope. You will need to read Isle of Hope to find out what these families go through.
I love Julie Lessman's books because they are so real. She writes about broken people in need of a Savior who is waiting with open arms for them!
Since their first kiss - pastor's son, seminary-bound Jack O'Bryen has known he will always love tomboy neighbor Lacey Carmichael. Sharing his faith - her witty, full-of-life personality is the perfect attraction for his sensibility and seriousness.
Eighteen-year-old Lacey has loved Jack since she was twelve years old. Her surgeon father Ben's continual rejection, verbal and emotional abuse compel her to seek affirmation of being loved through Jack's expressions of affection. Determined to serve God and feeling intense pressure and spiritual conflict, Jack meets Lacey's amorous advances with resistance.
When Lacey allows cousin Nicki to lead her astray by plotting to make Jack jealous through furthering the attentions of "bad-boy" Royce Barrister, Ben's abuse intensifies. Lacey's search for consolation becomes even more bold and Jack is forced to make serious decisions affecting their relationship and his faith.
"A Glimmer of Hope" is the prequel to Julie Lessman's emotional, compelling story of hope and forgiveness, "Isle of Hope". Previous readers of "Isle of Hope" will love learning the background of Jack and Lacey, new readers will more fully appreciate Lacey's transformation after reading "A Glimmer of Hope".
Never have another prequel and novel touched my heart as deeply as have "A Glimmer of Hope" and "Isle of Hope". Being somewhat biographical re Julie Lessman's previous relationship with her father, the realism of the characters and life situations takes readers through a gamut of emotions- alternately ripping the heart out through empathy for the characters, then filling it with joy through their redemption by a loving God. The story of Jack and Lacey is one to which many readers will relate/have related - it's reviews bearing testimony of His using it's power to inspire, heal emotional pain, and change lives of readers!!
